In a nutshell, no.
I haven’t checked, but perhaps, there are still tons of sites or youtube videos promoting Google adsense as your key to financial security. Before you get all excited about this, read on.
I started on adsense about 2005. At the time, I was already an adword advertiser.
The ads appeared on a few sites I operated and soon, in blogs. Now they appear in several blogs. When I first started, I used to make about US$ 300.00 a month.
Years passed, the number of blog posts grew by leaps and bounds. As my audience expanded, my check good smaller and smaller. So now, I am making less than US$ 100.00 – A YEAR!
Yes, with thousands of pages in which the ads appear, I have to believe that only a couple of clicks occur every two days, if any.
In the meantime, the price of google adwords ads has grown – A LOT. Good keywords cost between $1.00 to $3.00, while around 2005 they cost US$0.50.
That is not all. The other day, I posted something in one of my blogs, in which the ads appear in three locations. I had almost 200 hits in one day from that post alone- and I know that people read the content, judging from comments. Not only I did not get a single click on the ads, but google says the ads did not publish on my readers’ views. Mind you, it was posted on their own platform…
Most of the clicks I make any money on now pay me US$ 0.01. Yes, a single cent.
The math does not add up. As they like to say in the business, the metrics require some explaining.
But there really isn’t anybody to talk about such discrepancies with. So one does not know how much the ads from which one gets commissions pay, one doesn’t know whether the views are being properly accounted for , and one gotta go with the flow. Insofar as I know, I am probably being paid 1% commission on clicks! So much for remunerating work.
That means that in order for you to be making any sizable amount of money from adsense, you might need something like 200k or 300k page views a month. Meaning that you probably have to post 100 things a day, to get that many clicks.
I imagine that high end publishers get a better deal. That is, people with 1 million page views a month, who are somehow in the media, or know the proper channels.
If you are reading this, you are unlikely to fall into any of these categories. You are better off moonlighting flipping burgers at McD. You will make more money and perhaps even eat a free BigMac.
